IBS, PCOS. Severe Pains and Depression

I remember having serious pains and discomforts around my tummy almost everyday when I was really young. My Mother also informed me that when I was a toddler I was in the hospital for a week due to my pains. I was constantly told by teachers and peers that I was making it up though they always noticed I never ate, when they forced me to I would end being at medical room about 30mins after.
Food is an irritating issue for me as the only time my stomach doesn't hurt is when I wasn't eating at all, this obviously led to me becoming anorexic then becoming bulimic as when I tried to eat the pains would cause me to throw it all back up. I love my fruit though it also plays with my tummy but as I grew older, I have become use to the pain some times. I felt that I could have sufficient time to actually get a job, go to college but my periods (after experiencing a period irregularly just twice) disappeared my pains became a lot more severe leading to Depression and Insomnia. I had to pull out from college as I was physically or mentally capable to finish the course and work forced me to Resign due to my Pains.
The Pain could vary to stomach cramps and/or "Eggy Burps" to Falling down in anguish, feeling like the only way to prevent it is by slicing my stomach apart and ripping the contents out.My stomach bloats like a balloon, one day it will be normal at 25" the next as big as a 9 month gone pregnant lady, well about 46-48" was my biggest bloated belly size.
I was diagnosed with IBS last year after my doctor had investigated it for 17 years, retired and the investigation was started out by my new doctor all over again. I had been diagnosed in NOV 08 with Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and the Gynea said that the PCOS wouldn't increase the pain I had been experiencing with IBS and that I should attempt to loose weight. Though the Pain was far greater then to how my pain tolerance had go use to and the the pain shifts and changes. I was then Referred to a Dietitian who ADDED food to my diet and stated my weight is more muscle then Fat but I should really regulate my meals.
Passing through Food was only happening once a month and I was always treated for Constipation even though when I do actually go I don't strain and it doesn't hurt at all. Although recently my Feaces colour has changed to what normally (to me) would be a Dark Yellow to now a Matted Brown.
I just don't know if I can hack it anymore, I'm 20 years old almost 21 and I'm having to stay in my flat by myself constantly feeling lonely and in pain. My doctor won't prescribe me anything for my PCOS and the Pain Killers he has given me are not even strong enough to counter the pain. He is also reluctant on giving me them as I am depressed and the last "Suicidal spell" I had (at 16) I took a total of 264 tablets (a cocktail of a range of strong painkillers).
I get sick because I'm in so much Pain, I just want to rip out my stomach and stop it hurting. I want to get a Job, earn money to go to University and get a Qualification because I already should be doing it. I want to sleep a good nights sleep because I've had insomnia for the past two years (19 - present) and a previous two stint a year before (15-17). I feel like I'm loosing my head, I just want it to stop.

Any suggestions as I am sincerely Open to anything....

I have never written in a forum like this before (despite reading through a lot of them). However, I find myself nodding at everything written so far. I am not going to bring any of you down by adding a depressing note about my woes as I refuse to be defeated by PCOS and IBS. There is too much that is great about life and I am sure that there is an answer out there for each of us. I would like to ask though whether anyone has come across a specialist that understand the relationship between IBS and PCOS and the way that each aggravates the symptoms of the other? I would be grateful for any info as I haven't found someone who gets the link yet. Thanks

This is for all you ladies, I have many of the things you guys describe- in particular depression, PCOS and now possibly IBS-- it seems like a lot to handle and it get me down a lot, but I keep fighting back trying to find what works, reading forums, going to doctors, being proactive.

As far as PCOS and IBS- I know there are support groups out there, have you guys looked into them? I have found forums on both and at least there you guys can get ideas of where to go. Also, for PCOS- I have heard that most doctors put you on the pill as the-- remedy for all-- but the problem with that is that it doesn't go to the root of the problem. I did some research and found that there are doctors out there that do treat PCOS differently- I found one myself- she didn't prescribe the pill but instead gave me metformin and prometrium. Metformin helps to prevent or something with the sugar that affects us with PCOS and prometrium is a hormone (much less intense then the pill- which has a lot of side effects).

To find a doctor similar to mine I would check out this website, keep in mind though that most of these doctors are looking to heal you from PCOS or help you be fertile VS prescribe you a contraceptive.

http://www.fertilitycare.org/

(click under "find a teacher" and click the areas closest to you. Once you have done this a list of organizations will show up, I would call and ask them if they can help you with you PCOS or if they know who can)  Also, just so you know most of these places will want you to "Chart" you period meaning they will want you to keep track of when you get your periods and they will teach you (or find someone to teach you) how your body works throughout your cycle- even when you have PCOS- they will find a much more natural approach to get you healthy).

Hope this helps! Keep fighting don't give up!

Same here. I'm 30 and I have been feeling the same symptoms since puberty. I've always been an active type person but it has mad me where I don't want to do anything. My period has always been horrible. When I was 16, the doc put me on ortho cyclin. It helped through out high school but not enough. I had played sports but heaviness, pms, bloated, stopped up feeling, really interfered with my showing of skills. About 23 or 24 and changing my pill type after always being sick from it, my body decided to reject any birth control. I bled for 2 months on the pill and then when I stopped, it stopped bleeding. My cycles then went back to having pms up to 2 wks b/f I would start, it would come late, and then go full 7 days doubling up on tampons and pads. I'm so sick of watching the clock, wondering if I have enough pads, and being able to perform in my jobs. It has ruined many experiences for me. I've never been able to focus on life because I've had so many "accidents" and felt so horrible. Recently, I've had a cycle for 4 months and been put on lo estrogen. It's not helping enough. Still having discharge and a lot of other uncomfortable symptons. For the last 8 yrs, I've also been told I had IBS, given a poop pill, and shoved along. I've had 3 docs do that. I'm so sick of telling docs over and over and not getting relief. I have not had a child yet and worried about that. Mainly, I would like to have a normal day. I was told by a friend that she had to have exploratory surgery and found tissue attached to her bowels, bladder, ovaries, and everything around it. She had it cleaned up and feels great. Makes me wonder......

HI there,
I just want to say that i go throught the same thing as you each and every day of my life. I am so upset and have been suffering with the same exact symptoms as you for three days. First it was gastritis ,then it was constipation, then it went to ibs and then i keep getting cysts. Everyday i wake up i wonder what should i eat today because if i eat i get so bloated and cant breathe and my whole day is ruined. Everytime i go out to eat with my freinds i cannot enjoy my life because of this. I am getting worse and much more depressed. These stomache issues has overtaken my life and my teenage years have beeen wasted. I am 19 years old now and still sufferin.g I cannot go out with anybody and even scared to go on a date because of getting bloated by the food. I dont eat a lot but i still get bloated. Im afraid to eat and noone understands. there is nothing we can do about it . I have tried every home remedy and none of the medications work. I gained weight for no reason and its very hard to lose especially when your doing everything. But with such symptoms there is nothing we can do. I hope one day this all goes away!!!!

i have pcos as well..sounds to me like you can be glucose intolerant..meaning you can be allergic to wheat, barley and rye..things that thicken process foods, flour w/ wheat, pasta..and so on... i would recommend going to all natural foods..it helped me..i was diagnosed w/ ibs, but i thought it was BS. lol..i didn't think the doc was accurate, so when i got diagnosed w/ pcos, i finally felt relieved. someone was actually right?! so, you might wanna look into that..it's a lifestlye change, but it's worth it all.

Yes i was told to cut out everything with yeast in it,bread Pizzas, mushrooms, wine anything fermented, now taking a high dose of Acidophilus equal to having 8 bottles of Actimel a day,to get rid of bad bacteria and replace it with good. There is also a product called BUSCOPAN from chemists for IBS,also peppermint tablets help.
Good luck

Hi shadows24,

I have PCOS, a mild leaky gut problem and insomnia.  My problems are nothing near as serious as what you're describing.  However recently I've been seeing a doctor with an interest in alternative/complementary medicine - she describes herself as a Nutition and Integrative Medicine Specialist - and I thought you might find this useful too.  I've had a range of tests that other doctors wouldn't usually suggest, including something called Live Blood Analysis, which I would highly recommend.  For the gut problem, I'm on a diet low in sugar and starch, high in fibre, protein, complex carbohydrates and have been told to avoid foods containing yeast (including bread), fermented foods and mouldy foods like peanuts.  I'm also taking a range of supplements, including probiotics, gastrocare excel (a colostrum product) and citrus seed extract.

My main challenge is insomnia, which I have a blog about:

Good luck.
