8mm Kidney Stone-Action???

I hve recently had severe back/lower right abdominal/flank/groin/hip pain,lasting for around 36hrs.  In the nightime l had pain in my virgina/uretha and passed blood upon "whiping" and blood in toilet.  Pain subsided the next day only hip pain remained,doctor carried out an ultrasound.  Now one week to the day the results have returned,l am pain free but ultrasound shows a non obstructive 8mm stone in my right kidney,slight  prominence of the right renal pelvics but no other features of renal tract obstruction..... My Doctor has said we wait till any further pain or discomfort and will then refer me to a Urologist.  My question is would l have already passed a stone? and would the remaining 8mm stone pass on it's own,should l wait or go to a Urologist now before l have pain and trouble....??? Confused

Thank you for reply,l did actually resend my question attached to another thread on this forum.  I apologise l didnt realise you had answered the above.  I have jst been to another doctor as l had blood tests performed (not for kidneys they were general well being tests etc),my calcium level,diabetes,cholestoral etc etc everything was normal and great.  Doctor therefore doubts it's a calcium stone and suspects uric acid stone?? He agrees that l have definately passed a stone/stones and that the 8mm one is still there and in his oppinion he says it could hve been there for years andy may never move. I'm thinking well thats great for u but what if it does move,l can't get that out.  I asked him if there anyway to detect y l'm gettng the stones or what they are made of and he's basically said "no not really" and that there's nothing they can do cept wait and if l get more pain etc go straight back to him.  All a bit too much after experiencing the pressure and pain of the renal colic.  I doubt l'd be able to pass an 8mm stone without any problems?? he also said that once it passes through the ureter if pretty much disolves or breaksdown in the bladder anyways.  Guess he doesn't know how much pressure u feel in the pelvic region.  it's awful........spose l just hve to keep my fingers crossed it doesn't move or ever cause me prolems.  Also on my ultrasound it stated that l had slight prominence of the right kidney pelvis,what could this be.  I had all my pain and passed something well before the ultrasound was performed......I will just hve to keep drinking heaps and see what happens.

How are you? Majority of stones 4 mm or less in size usually will pass spontaneously, however majority of stones larger than 6 mm will require some form of intervention. Before doing any surgical intervention, many doctors try conservative measures such as alpha adrenergic blocking agent ( Flomax, Uroxatral, terazosin or doxazosin), which acts to reduce the muscle tone of the ureter and facilitate stone passage. For smaller stones near the bladder, this type of medical treatment can increase the spontaneous stone passage rate by about 30%.  There are other measures that can be used to encourage the passage of a stone such as:  increased hydration, medication for treating infection and reducing pain, and diuretics to encourage urine flow and prevent further stone formation. However, if it still stays and does not move in 4 weeks, surgical intervention may be warranted.  Discuss any worries with your doctor and also your history of diverticulum disease.

I think u for the feedback and l agree,how will l pass it?? l can't.  I think the Doc is thinking well it's not obstructing and so it might sit there forever,right after the attack l have already had etc (l'm sure l must hve been passing a stone then) and with a slight protrubence in my right kidney pelvis (what could that be), l think l'd be very lucky that this sucker will sit still and not cause problems.  He considers that if l drink heaps of water and never get dehydrated etc it will stave off any possible problems.  ?// where did the first pain etc come from then,l drink constant fluid as l also have diverticulum disease of the bowel n l have to drink heaps.............grrrrr think l will go see another doc and get a referral to specialist.....thanks for your help.

With my experience of passing a 4mm stone, I would say go to the urologist right away.  My 4mm stone got stuck for 15 days in my ureter and had to be manipulated with a stent, this was after they told me that I should be able to pass it with no problem, yeah right!!!  This led to swelling of the kidney and infection.  If I was you, don't wait for that thing to go into the ureter, it will hurt BAD!  Believe me.  They can break it up into small pieces so you can pass it more easily.
