Blood clots in kidney and have no answers

My son-in-law was admitted a month go to the hospital with severe back pain. They discovered a blood clot and with more tests, several blood clots.  Ran every test possible with no results as to why they were there. Found a small mass on adrenal gland and weren't concerned. Prescribed pain meds and blood thinners as his blood was thick.  After a week of every test imaginable, sent him home.  Week later back in the ER with extreme pain.  Told his pancreas was inflamed, kidney not the problem, turned around and said kidney was the problem ??????? Enzyme levels elevated at admittance (500) climbed to 900. After three days getting his enzyme levels down, was sent home and told to rest and let kidney heal.  Day later pain was severe and back to ER.  Er doctor told him, can't do nothing for you, go to pain management.  What is going on????
