Competitive sport with 1 kidney

by SneakyRussian, Mar 12, 2008 08:05AM
Some 8 years ago I had a nephrectomy owing to a narrowing in my one ureter and the attached kidney consequently going polycystic. The remaining kidney has had no problems at all and I have been cleared recently again after kidney function tests.

I am intending to take part in an 8 day Mountain bike stage race in South Africa called the Cape Epic. I need to know if there is any reason why I should not ride as hard as I can on this event. It will be my first such stage race, 8 days, 5-8hours a day and very high temperatures.

Over the years I have become very attuned to correct hydration, so that should not be an issue. What else should I watch out for , or be aware of?

Looking forward to a response.
