Creatinine levels

Hello, and thank you in advance for any insight you can offer.
Approximately a month or so ago my father went to see his cardiologist. His blood work came back with elevated creatinine levels. So, off to the nephrologist we went. After another battery of tests/blood work on July 7th, along with filling the orange jug, the doc came back to us and said my dad's kidney's were functioning at just under 10%. His BUN was 99% and his creatinine level was 4.64. Aug 2nd will be his 90th birthday. He also has CHF, diabetes & neuropathy, so when he told me he had no intentions of going through dialysis, I knew what course he was on and what the outcome would be. I respect his decision, and the whole family is trying to spend as much quality time with him as possible. Today, July 22nd, the nephrologist called to give me the most recent results of the blood work. BUN is now 102% and creatinine is up to 5.26. That's a jump of a little over 1/2 point in 2 weeks. He's already on Hospice, and while they're really nice, I'm getting frustrated because I'm not getting the answers I'm looking for. Both the nephrologist & hospice nurse are vague as to what we can expect. I'm not looking for a play-by-play or exact date & time of when he'll pass, but some kind of approximation would be helpful. So, after all that, my question is: Given my dad's rate of kidney failure (build up of creatinine & BUN%), approximately how much time does he have left? What can we expect as far as his comfort is concerned? Again, thank you for your honesty and advice.
John

I'm so sorry about your father, and understand your feelings and concerns. Hospice makes one as comfortable as possible, and you can tell if they aren't.  But if your father seems comfortable, maybe it's time to enjoy what time you have, as it's now up to God.  I know you want to make sure he's as comfortable, and an estimate on his passing would help so that you all could be there. But sometimes nobody has this answer, and this may be why they are so vague.  Hospice and doctors will tell you if they know, as they understand why you want and deserve this information.  I don't think they have any way of knowing with his age and health issues. Be thankful that you've got the opportunity to spend this time with him, and to tell him you love him.  One thing I have not only experienced personally, but have known others who have done this, is to let them know that it's okay for them to go.  They will try to hang on for everyone they love and that love them.  Let your father know that it's okay for him to go when he's ready, this seems to mean a lot to the dying.  Blessings to all of you...........
