Do I have my right Kidney removed?

June 7, 2009 4:30PM

I was diagnosed with a hydronephronic sac and decreased glomerular function with cortical thinning on 1996. This renal dynamic study  was repeated until 2006 with no significant changes. But last may I wnet to the hospital due a strong back pain, the lab urine and blood tests analysis show the following results;

1- Urea nitrogen..... 35 MG/DL
2- Creatinine...........1.93 MG/DL
3- Red blood count   6-8 HPF

A multi-slide CT of adomen and pelvis with oral contrast made on June 2, 09 demostrated a severe hydronephrosis of right kidney with associated thinning of cortex with a secondary high degree of UPJ obstruction, perinephric stranding and fluid. Also, strandiness around the right psoas in the lower abdomen. The left kidney shows a small calculus in mid-pole and a small hypodensity measuring 1.5X1.5 cm in the lateral cortex.

I have been taking the same blood pressure medication Cozaar 25 mg for the last 3 years with no problems and Lipitor 20 mg the last 2 months.  When I was younger I was told that removal of the kidney would possibly solve my high blood pressure problem.  I been running a blood tests once a year with not health problem in relation with the kidney but colesterol.  Should I consider having this kidney removed while i am still young (58 years) to protect theleft kidney?
