Double Ureter

I was born with a double ureter on my left kidney.  I had preventative surgery 6-7 years ago.  I am still getting a UTI twice a month and my urologist keeps prescribing me anti-biotics that seem to do no good.  It starts with lower abdominal pain and swelling/bloating, then drops of yeast arrive and then pain sets in.  I am still having lower back pain.  After the years my rectall area has become painful, it seems that air gets trapped and I have painful air movement in that area. Does it have anything to do with my bladder and Kidney problems?  My doctor says I need more testing but the tests themselves develop a yeast/ urinary infection and I would like to get some help....do you know of anything I can suggest to my doctor?

I am a 37 year old female who has had reoccuring uti's for over 2 years now. They progressively have gotten worse and I ended up in the hospital with a bad case of Pylonephritis (kidney infection) just this past week. I found out while doing research in hospital that my first CT scan I had when this all started found that I had Double ureters on the left, where all my pain and problems are. I had a Hysterectomy a few months prior to the onset of all my problems. I was not born with double ureters so I guess they messed something up. It's getting to the point where if im not allergic to the antibiotic i need then im resistant to it. I'm on antibiotics now (Levaquin) and they won't do the Cystoretrograde to confirm the double ureters until my urine is clean but i get them literally back to back with maybe 3-4 days in between. I wish they would have an open schedule where i could call when im clean but they dont. What to do? I live in VA and would like to see a new doctor, any suggestions on superb Urologists?

I have 4 ureters too! I had surgery at age 2 because I had Urinary Reflux, and that's when the doctors found them. But the crazier part is that the second pair of urters aren't attached to my bladder but they are closed off, weird! I am 19 and I have recently been talking to my parents more about my surgery and what was wrong with me, which is why I have been researching my condition. I was told that I was very rare because of the 4 ureters, and I'm strangely excited about finding someone else who has them! Lol! Sadly, I get infections very often, usually around 2 or 3 times a month, my doctor has had to put me on refill of Bactrim and take a dose every time I have just spent a night with my boyfriend, just to prevent these infections.

Hey I was 2 when the doctor realized I has a urinary problem so they check and sure enough I had a double ureter, only my problem was that they were twisted around each other so I had to get them both removed and then put in a new one. I'm 17 now and completely fine, I was only in the hospital for like 3 days and then I was all good

Sounds like removing the extra ureter is a no-brainer. I had mine removed when i was 8yrs old, 1978. I've been fine since.

I am 42 and have double full functioning ureters. Growing up I got sick all the time. I had kidney and bladder infections and now as an adult have been having trouble with fluid in my legs. I get back pain once in a while but, as far as getting sick easily it has always been an issue for me. I do not drink or smoke and am overweight which i also attribute somewhat to this medical problem as well. I find as I am getting older I have to make sure I am going to the bathroom more frequently. I tend to have to pee more at night. I asked when I was younger why I got sick so much and was told it was because my kidneys were processing so mych more crap out of my system.

I am 27 yeard old and have a double ureter and have been in and out of the hospital a lot over the past 10 years, I have had alot of iv therapy for uti's and since i have had my first child in 2008 i have been lucky to not get as many utis. The problem I have now is I am always sick, colds flus anything that is going around i get it bad and i get it quick. It seems like my immune system is horrible, is there any relation to having immune system issues and have a double ureter? does anyone know?

I have 4 ureters too, I'v never met anyone else with that condition
What exactly would surgery do to help with that? Is it only to prevent UTI's or other symptoms?

Hi Farriage,I have 2 complete and functioning sets of ureters. I am a 69 yr old female. I worked surgery for many years and was able to hold my urine for up to 7 to 8 hours on long surgical cases. I find now, that I can only sleep from 30 to 60 minutes at a time before I wake and have to dash to the bathroom.I too have had alot of kidney pain, but I think mine is from being on Darvocet for so many years due to my arthritis. This does not explain away your problems with pain, but my question is: do you also have a problem with frequent unination? Thank you for taking the time with me. Sincerely  Joey Lewis

Hi,
I am assuming you have 3 ureters. The normal Human has 2. I have 4 which is very, very rare. Only 0.2% of humans are diagnosed with this. My urolugist says that i can have surgery but that it won't help my lower back and stomach pain. So your double ureters may not be the source of the pain.

My daughter was born with a duplicate ureter on her left side and the extra ureter was not draining into her bladder.  It caused her to have constant uti's, leaking of urine and a greenish-yellow pus (due to infections).  It took 4 1/2 years for dr's to finally figure out what was wrong with her and nonstop persistance from me. Her left kidney also has damage now but the right is totally fine.  She had surgery over a year ago and is doing well now.  Recovery wasn't that bad but I do think kids have an amazing tendency to bounce back quickly. You know your body better than anyone so get a second opinion if your current doctor is not sure what's going on.  She went to about 5 pediatricians who thought nothing was wrong and nine months of urology appts with a nurse practioner and she was finally diagnosed by a very experienced pediatric urologist .  She also had the following test which showed nothing: DMSA, VCUG and cystoscopy.  Hope this info helps and good luck:)

hi i have double ureters too and i was scheduled to have a surgery in two weeks time.at this time im taking antibiotics for my recurrent UTI. i am just nervous if my surgery will work  or not.does it take too long to recover after the surgery?
