High Calcium Levels...Why can't a dr tell me why my body is doing this???

by JBSBCB, May 01, 2009 04:57PM
Hi- I gave birth to my daughter in April 2006. Ever since then I have been experiencing pain in my back (left side) After many months I finally was sent to a Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) they did a 24 hr urine collection and a CT scan. Results came back over 600mg of calcium in urine. Norm is 250mg. They also found multiple cysts in my left kidney. I have been seeing her and doing these tests now every 3 months and my calcium levels are still high even with being on a Diruretic she prescribed. I still feel pain and am starting to get many other dibilitating symptoms. The doctor never seems to be able to tell me why my body is releasing so much calcium through my urine. Is there anybody out there that is going through the same thing and HAS gotten answers??? Please help!!!!

Hi there,

I am not a Dr, nor am I in the medical field.

I have high serum (blood) calcium and am awaiting results of a 24hr hrine collection test...I have a condition called medullary sponge kidney, this is where cysts grow in the collecting ducts of the kidney and can lead to kidney stones being formed.

Do you have kidney stones or UTI's?

Have you asked your Nephrologist to do a calcium blood test and a PTH blood test to see if your high urine calcium output could be connected to Hyperparathyroidism.

Have a look at Parathyroid.com website, it is excellent, it gives you a list of symptoms that go a long hyperparathyroid.

Hope this helps a little, and hope you start to feel better soon.

Take care,
Sam

Go to an Endocronologist !!  They also take care of calcium levels and you can get another opinion. It's a good idea since this new opinion would be coming by another specialty. The two doctors can talk to each other after new work up and probable new types of testing.

I have had my thyroid and parathyroid checked many times and all seems to come back normal. I will talk to my doctor about what you said. Thanks for the feedback.
