Is a 2cm lesion on my Kidney something to worry about?

I was in moderate pain and feeling very achy  all afternoon with a small fever...The pain starting getting worse in my right side and my face was very flushed so I went to the ER..I thought at first I was having a Appendix attack..But after a CT scan with contrast they told me I had a 2cm Lesion on my right kidney and was given cipro, zofran and some pain meds and told to follow up with a kidney specialist...So I went a few days later and the kidney dr. looked at the CT scan and said at my age it was a 30/70 percent chance it was cancer but I was instructed to wait for 6 months to see if it would get larger...Is this something I should worry about? Should I get a second opinion?

Thanks for any help!!

Renal lesions (cysts) are fairly common, and "they" say that 75% of Americans will have one that is asymptomatic by the time they're 75 years old.

Those of us lucky enough to get them at a younger age, that cause complications, obviously don't fall into the above demographic!

First things first... take a deep breath and don't panic. I have more than several lesions on my left kidney that are all Class-2 "Simple" cysts. There is a chart called the 'Bosniak-Chart'. Ask your Urologist, when you go to see him/her, where on the Bosniak your lesion(s) fall.

Class-1 & 2 Simple cysts are less likely to form cancer than Class-3 & 4. I won't post the chart here, as the information is readily available on Wiki or Google. The 2 biggest cysts that I had, I had removed via a 'Renal Cysts Decortication'. But mine were Class 1 & 2 'simple' cysts and easily operable.

Your doctor is playing it safe by saying that you have a 30%-70% chance of getting cancer. But not all cancer is necessarily bad. You may have a cancerous lesion that's benign that may have to be monitored every 6 months.

Talk to your Urologist about your concerns.

I don't know anything about lesions. I would say though a second opinion is never a bad idea.
