Kidney Failure in 12yr old boy

My best friends son is currently in the hospital with severe kidney damage to both kidneys. outside of weight loss there was nothing to indicate he was having any problems. Her son said he didnt experience any pain or symptoms until the was taken to the ER for a fever. Thats when the doctors determine his kidneys were failing and he would need either a transplant if the affects aren't reversal. My question is what would cause kidney failure in a 12yr old boy who has not had any health conditions prior to this
