Looking for info on reflux

Hi. I have a daughter who will be 10 in July.  Since I can't remeber when she has suffered from UTI's. In 2003, she was seen by her doctor for yet another UTI, not uncommon for her to get 5-6 a year, and he decided to send her for a VCUG. It showed she had at that time Grade 1 kidney reflux.  She was started on antibotics and in the first 6 months had 2 more UTI's. Then all of a sudden either she stopped telling me or she just didnt get another. She always does what I call the PP dance....squating with legs crossed and this painful expression on her face. Anyways, after about 18 months, the urologist did a ultrasound and saw no scarring and did not feel she needed another VCUG at that time. Just a few weeks ago, her new peditrician decided she needed to have it done again. In the 8 months she has been in his office she has had 3 UTI's and an infected lymph node that was surgically removed after 2 months with no apparant cause of the infection. The current VCUG showed she stil has Grade 1.  My questions are: 1) What is the treatment now...more antibotics 2) or because of her age and the fact its been 3 years will they just surgically correct the flap.

Thank you all.

Liz

Hi,
Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is characterized by the retrograde flow of urine from the bladder to the kidneys. VUR may be associated with urinary tract infection (UTI), hydronephrosis, and abnormal kidney development.
The evaluation and management of VUR in children is currently undergoing reevaluation, as guidelines for treatment are being rewritten.
When unilateral and/or bilateral grades I-IV reflux or unilateral grades III-V reflux are diagnosed in children aged 1-5 years, they should be treated initially with continuous prophylactic antibiotics.
It seems like anti-biotics is the line of treatment at present. For more information regarding criteria for surgery you can access http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic2838.htm
