Please help!!

I've been really sick for the last few weeks.  It started as a uti was treated for it and wound up in the hospital twice last week with excruciating pain in lower back and abdomen.  First they said it was a kidney stone then after the cat scan they said no there's no stone.  The cat scan showed a lot of swelling in my lower back.  I've also been having strange bowls sometimes with lots of blood.   I'm constantly nauseas and throwing up.  The urologist said it wasn't urinary,  there's scaring in my kidney from a terrible infection a few years ago but that's it.   I'm taking tramadol 100 mg every six hours along with a muscle relaxer.  But I'm not finding relief from the pain.   I'm also on 100 mg serequil and 15mg Remron at bedtime and gabapentin 300  three times a day.   I have no energy and the pain is horrible.  Does anyone have any idea what could be going on?  On a side note I have developed horrible headaches as well.   I am seeing a orthopedic Monday but I am so sick and don't know what else to do.  Please help!!!

Thanks for the feedback. My lipase was low, red blood cell count was low, mhc was high and hgt or hct forget the name was low. The hospital didn't even say anything was wrong with my blood work but my finances mom is an RN and she said those could indicate a few different things. The orthopedic surgeon believes I have a torn disc in my lower back, but also believes the stomach problems are a secondary issue. I previously saw a gastroenterologist and had an endoscopy performed. He said I have bad acid reflux and prescribed me Prilosec which I stopped taking about 3 weeks ago so that could explain it but I've heard from others the constant nausea and vomiting could be something else like diverticulitis or something.

Any help I would greatly appreciate if anyone has any experience or any idea as to what could be causing my symtoms would be a great help.

Hello Kster,

Welcome to the Pain Management Community. I am sorry to hear about your painful undiagnosed pain and symptoms.

You question seems to be more of a medical one than of pain management. Please know that you are always welcome here - that said here's a link to our General Health Community. I encourage you to post your question there also - as you should receive more responses:

Excruciating pain in lower back and abdomen, unusual bowel issues and headaches can indicate a multitude of medical conditions and be very difficult to diagnosis.

You've consulted a urologist and will be seeing an orthopedic specialist - if he finds nothing I would certainly consult a gastroenterologist.

Don't give up, there is a reason for why you feel the way you do. The "swelling" noted in your lower back is interesting. I assume Endometriosis has been ruled out.

It may take awhile to determine the cause of your symptoms but keep searching. A bright physicians, maybe someone that looks outside the box and can see the total picture is what you need.

I wish I had more answers for you. As said by fntn, we don't know your labs or the results of other tests you may have had performed.

Be assertive. You are your own best advocate. No one know how you feel but you. If you pain isn't well controlled, speak up, Other medications may work better to manage your pain. Gabapentin did nothing for me. Research indicates that often the dose has to be very high to be effective - so high that the side effects are worse than the original pain. I found Lyrica to be a better option - not everyone would agree as we all respond differently to specific medications.

Tramadol seems to be the 1st choice of drug in managing pain. Those of us with mean chronic pain often find Tramadol ineffective - though some ppl do very well on it. Again it depends on the type of pain, level of pain and how your system utilizes the drug.

I hope you'll keep us posted. I'll be very interested to learn more - as well as the outcome of your search. I wish you the very best.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Is there anything else unusual about your blood work? Unfortunately what you describe is very unspecific and we would like to help.
