What's going on here? Swollen kidney, possible removal...

Hi everyone

My mum has had exhaustion and lower back discomfort for a couple of years, mainly every time she walks.  She always used to walk happily for 2 hours a day with the dog.  Now she's having to stop after ten minutes and keeps stopping and starting.

She also felt a heaviness in her pelvic area.  After a scan it was discovered she had a large fibroma on an ovary (since had both ovaries removed, she's aged 71 and I think they just thought it safer to get rid of both) and a swollen kidney.

When she saw the consultant 8 months ago he said he wasn't worried about the kidney, no cancer, that he would just keep an eye on it.

Today she saw a different consultant for follow up and he told her that his colleague said to remove the kidney, but that he was reluctant as it's a big operation.  So he's referring her onto another specialist, this specialist has a more diverse knowledge base.

Any thoughts?  Why remove a swollen kidney that's not cancerous?

Thanks.
