Yearlong hematuria update

Been having distinctly red or rusty brown urine for almost a year now (will be a year at the end of this month). Had all the x-rays, CTs, blood work, urine tested, an IVP and a couple of scopes into the bladder. They could find nothing. A couple months ago the doc said, "Drink lots of water and come see me in a year."  I was ready to use that scope on him. LOL

Blood in the urine has been increasing, day and night, not just day time when I'm active. Went back, had another CT and what do you know:  a 6 mm stone in the right kidney. Wonder why it didn't show before? Finally have a reason for this mess and will be zapped (lithotripsy) in Sept.

Now I wonder if my BP will drop back to normal after this. During the past year my BP has slowly crept up from average 117 (systolic) to 130 and above. Anyone know? I know there's a connection between kidney troubles and BP.

Hi,
There are many types of kidney stones and not all may be detected in imaging studies. While the kidneys play an important role in regulating blood pressure, the presence of nonobstructing stones in the urinary tract do not directly cause blood pressure increase. Instead, the pain associated with the stone passage may be responsible for the increased BP. If all other diagnostic tests were normal, the increase may be due to essential hypertension which suggests no definite cause. Hope this helps. Take care and do keep us posted how it goes.

Thank you for popping back in. I already know about the foods that can color the urine and I don't eat those anyway. I've found that when I'm active, my kidney bleeds a lot more than when I'm being quiet (in the evening for example). But I'm not giving up my walks and hiking just yet. Another 6 weeks and all will be well. I'm just happy to finally have an answer. Thank you for being so available in this forum.

Hi,
Thanks for the updates. It is good that the blood pressure readings are okay. Although you may need to inform your doctor regarding any  additional symptoms or changes in your urine color also especially if urine turns darker or more red. Try also to avoid food such as beets, blackberries or food coloring that may also contribute to the urine color. Take care and best regards.

Thank you. I've been checking my BP at home again and it's looking pretty decent: 121/76. Since I have little to no discomfort from the stone except a mild ache now and then, I'd have to say it may be the stress of going to the doctor and facing the scope procedure at the time. Not fun.

Today my urine looks like dark burgundy wine. I suppose that's the nature of having a stone. This is a first for me. Sept. 12th can't come soon enough (day of lithotripsy).

Again, thank you.
