Hi,

If the results of your recent urinalysis showed high number of red blood cells, a KUB ultrasound will help determine if there are stones recurring in your kidneys. If there is normal rbc, then it would not be indicated. The abdominal ultrasound with normal results was done a year ago(2007) and would not show recent infection or stones. Were you given an antibiotic for the UTI? It is important that you take the antibiotic as prescribed to prevent resistance of the organisms responsible for the infection.Drinking plenty of fluids is also advised.

Take care and regards.

thank you for the response. had urinalysis and the doctor said there is an infection UTI, also did sonogram of the kidney this the result:

abdominal & retroperitoneal ultrasound:  real time examination of the abdomen demonstrates normal size & echogenicity of the live without fatty infiltration or dilaration of intrahepatic ducts. the sagittal diameter of the right lobe of the liver is 10.2cm without focal parenchymal abnormalities. (1) examination demonstrates no stone, sludge or thickening of the walls of the gallbladder. (2) the common bile duct appears normal & measures 0.3cm. (3) the pancreas shows no masses, cysts or calcification. (4) the spleen is normal with sagittal diameter 7.2cm without focal parenchymal lesions. review of the kidneys demonstrates normal size, shape & position without hydronephrosis or stones. the right kidney measures 9.4x4.0x4.0cm & the left kidney measures 9.4x4.1x4.4cm. both kidneys shows no masses, cysts or calcifications. there is no ascites or pleural effusion. the abdominal aorta is normal with no evidence of abdominal aortal aneurysm. conclusion: normal examination of the abdomen. no evidence of abdominal aortal aneurysm. this was taken last june 30, 2007

is an ultrasound of the KUB still needed?

Hi,

Hematuria or blood in the urine may be a symptom of recurrent kidney stones. Are there other signs or symptoms present? There is an increased chance of stone recurrence with patients with history of stone formation. A urinalysis and ultrasound of the KUB may be able to help with the diagnosis. It would be best to see your doctor for furtehr evaluation and management.

Take care and keep us posted.
