hydronephrosis and nonobstructing stone

hydronephrosis and nonobstructing stone

I'm a 53 yo female with a recent history of recurring flulike illness with vague abdominal pain, nausea, malaise, one time a slight low-grade fever. This has happened three times this summer, each time lasting a week. I had an abdominal ultrasound last week that showed mild hydronephrosis of the right kidney and a small, nonobstructing stone. My doctor doesn't think these findings mean anything or even need to be investigated. I'm worried that my kidney might be obstructed by something they couldn't see in the US and needs to be treated soon. I also wonder if my illness could be a recurring UTI. What could cause the hydronephrosis? Is there probably another stone that they couldn't see or is the nonobstructing stone more likely caused by backup of urine due to obstruction? I don't have any history of kidney stones but I have had white cloudy material in my urine sometimes. Since getting the US report I've been drinking a lot of water to try to pass the stone and have noticed some mild discomfort and pinching in the groin when my bladder is full. I've never had severe pain in the side or back though.

Please help -- thanks for any answers.

To answer your question.  US doesn't always detect stones.  If they're too small, they certainly can't detect them.  The usually don't follow the ureter down to the bladder to detectany stones there either.  The only way to completely rule this idea out is a CT.  Seveal things can cause hydronephrosis.  They are crossing vessels that lay on the ureter and cause an obstruction, another is a floating kidney tat drops down when you stand up, and of coarse if you had a stone blocking the ureter.  One of the things that can go along w/ hydronephrosis is UTI.  This is because the urine stays in the kidney too long and causes infection to build up.  I would think they could esil etect this with a urinalysis.  In all hnesty, tey just don't get too excited about mil hydronephrosis.  But th least they can do is monitor it from time to time and treat any UTIs that come long.

Hi Shelly,

Ovarian cyst can also cause hydronephrosis.  In my case, my uterus wa free floating and had shoved it's self over against my ureter causing all kinds of aweful sx.  These cyst can also cause the abdominal pain too.  Cyst form periodically and sometimes don't mean anything.  Most just pop on their own, but they can tell on the US if they are fluid filled or somehing to be concerned about.  Also, please read the privious post to fizzixgal.
