When completing a transplant, is the entry from the front or the rear and how large is the incision ?  What is an average time for recovery?  What is the percentage of success?  How long is the surgery ?

How are you? In kidney transplants, a curved incision is made in the recipient’s pelvic region usually 8-10 inches long. It runs diagonally from the pubic area up to the bottom of the rib cage.  in most cases the barely functioning existing kidneys are not removed because this has been shown to increase the rates of surgical morbidities, the kidney is usually placed in a location different from the original kidney. The transplant surgery lasts about three hours.  Living donor kidneys normally require 3-5 days to reach normal functioning levels Light activity at home is encouraged and movement of legs is important to prevent formation of blood clots. You can expect to return to normal activities, such as showering, driving or walking up stairs within a week. Acute rejection occurs in 10% to 25% of people after transplant during the first sixty days. Rejection does not necessarily mean loss of the organ, but may require additional treatment.The typical patient will live ten to fifteen years longer with a kidney transplant than if kept on dialysis. Dr. Santos did an excellent job explaining the process of the kidney transplant. I work with kidney and heart transplant clients at a hospital, and I work with preparing people to receive and return home after a transplant. At our facility, we generally have people in the hospital four to seven days after a kidney transplant. The person starts on IV antirejection medication, then they are switched to oral antirejection medication. We tell people that they are not to drive for about three to four weeks, unless the MD tells them otherwise, due to the pain medications and incision site (and general weakness from recovery of a major surgery). Our clients are not supposed to lift anything over 10 pounds for a month to a month and a half due to trying to prevent a hernia or tearing of the surgical site. We request that the person receive laboratory blood draws 3x per week: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: usually 8am. This is very important since this lab draw tells us whether the immunosuppressant medication is being processed effectively by our client's liver/body (i.e. if the person takes their evening dose of the immunosuppressant medications at 8pm, then the lab draw on Mon, Wed, Fri needs to be between 8am-8:30am).
