mom has kidney cysts and 70 percent kidney function

my mom went into kidney failure acute and chf last year. the dr said they found kidney cysts but they are small and not to worry. the other dr told her her kidney function is 70 percent. well, when she has to visit the kidney specialist she gets worried. she thinks she is going to die with only 70 percent kidney function and kidney cyst. the last time the specialist said her cysts were tiny and not to worry. she is scared and is 82 years old. i don't know what to do to calm her down. the dr gave her xanaz 0.25 i hope she dosen't get addicted to this. please any one help

First of all... take a deep breath and calm down.

Secondly, 70% kidney function in an 82 year old is pretty good! I've got 60% in my left kidney and 70% in my right, and I'm only 39, and my prognosis is a long and happy life, as long as I watch what I drink and stick to my medication regime.

As for the Xanax, only she can know whether or not she's going to get 'addicted'. Remember, being "med dependent" and being "addicted" are 2 completely different things. She's 82 years old... I'd cut her some slack. If it makes her comfortable, I don't see any harm in letting her have a Xanax now and then.

Good luck!
