I suffer from high "protein in urine" or high creatinine levels, now it's 2.4, but it was higher. I reccommend you read Dr. Walser's book on a low-protein, low-phoshorus diet to avoid dialysis. Your kidney doctor will probably tell you to go on a low-protein diet, but won't give you specifics. Dr. Walser's book explains the diet. It's rather hard diet to stick with, but beats the alternative.
I know someone who developed protein in the urine and kidney problems after being on a medication for diabetes. I don;t recall which one it was.
If you are on medication, I would ask your doctor if you should switch to a different one.
You know, you can alter or possibly even eliminate your diabetes by staying away from high fructose corn syrup (read all labels) and cutting back on sugars and starches.
Take care!
Hi,
When was the first time that you were diagnosed with diabetes?
Are you taking any medications for the diabetes?
Proteinuria may need further assessment. Were casts present in the urine? Are there RBC's in the urine significant enough for a hematuria ( >5 /hpf)?
You may need blood tests to determine serum creatinine and BUN levels. Your glomerular filtration rate has to be ascertained.
Discuss this with your physician and keep us posted regarding his advice.
Thank you so much for the response! I hope its nothing serious, also. Yikes. Did your husband have a growth or something on his kidney? or just high protein levels? What were the symptoms of what he has, if there were any? It sure scares me to think that something could really be wrong with me. I mean, the diabetes was a shock...I have 4 little ones and i want to be around for them! :( I am going to try to get into the doc today and find out something. Keep your fingers crossed for me! (please) and I hope your hubby is ok.
Hi,my husband had/has high levels of protein in his urine - he has FOCUL SEGMENTAL GLOMERUAL SCLEROSIS ask her if it could be this, unfortunately the only way to establish this is by having a kidney biopsy - I am certainly not saying its what you have, its just one possibility. My fingers are crossed for you that its something not so serious.
