Advice From someone with a lap band PLZ

Hello, I have started the procedures for weight loss surgery. I have not yet decided on the procedure I would like (roux en-y gastric bypass, or lap band) I was wondering if there was any advice that any of you could give me about the lap band that might be helpful to me. I know ppl who have had the bypass, but have never known anyone who has had the lap band. I would appreciate anything you could tell me, good, bad or ugly. Thank you so much.

There are a lot of good things about the lap band such as you are not restricted to what you can eat, but how much. You should (for best results) eat healthy though. You do not have dumping syndrom (syndrome) if you eat sugar. And you generally do not have a vitamin deficency either as you still have the stomach attached. If your like me, you tend to eat fast and the brain never seems to register that your full until you are really full which in turn make you lathargic among other weighty issues. The restriction of the lap band - you emediatly know your full after about a half cup or less.

I'm scheduled for surgery by Dr. Rodriguez in Juarex, MX this Friday.  I'm nervous but determined to get the best results possible.  Has anyone been there?  What should I expect, etc.?

I have a band and I am restricted in what i can and can't eat - bread, meat, vegies.  apart from that, it has worked well.  if you don't sabotage the band you will lose the weight with the aid of exercise.  have a good team with you on your journey and you will have the support you need to know if you are having problems/issues with the band or the port.

If you follow the rules and do exactly what the doctor recommends, you can and will lose weight with the LapBand.  I have lost 107 pounds in 4 1/2 months.  I have done extermely well because I have not cheated AT ALL.  The most important thing is mindset.  If you have a weakness for certain foods (chocolate, bread, etc), you will have no only slow, if any, weight loss, but eating bread and other "forbidden" foods HURTS and will cause vomiting.  The band restricts how much you eat, more than what you eat.  Also, if you are a soda addict like I was, believe me, once you try it once, you will never want another one - it hurts going down and it REALLY hurts coming up.  Expect to eat a lot of meat, some COOKED vegetable, very few carbs and drink as much water as you can.  It's not only a weight change, it's a life change, but if you have the band adjusted properly, you never get hungry, it's just getting past the mental hunger that is the hard part.

I'm a Lap Band patient having mine in 2007.  Very little pain when I woke up. I felt like I had started a new life. Three months after had a fill and came home, losing weight and doing fabulous.  Had a fill locally by the end of the summer and the place I went to must have done something odd, we don't know I just know my fill didn't stick. I had hunger, not great but moreso than before.  Some may find their tastebuds change, pallette changes when you have this done as mine did.  Went back out to doctor in the fall, had lost 53 pounds.  Fill was corrected, found things floating in the fluid for whatever reason but the doctor who did my band fixed it.

About three months later, I had lost 85 lbs. when I woke up with pain in my lower back. It was believed the weight loss shifted how I carried my weight putting stress on my upper lumbar region of my back where was found an old sports injury.  The pain never stopped.

I do not regret the band at all.  I frankly believed it saved my life. I had no control over eating and could eat endlessly.  I look at my children who are now adults, see their eating habits and weight and know I must have passed it on to them.  I have control on portion but my tastebuds are so mixed up, one day I can eat cereal the next day I just one juice and fruit.

Was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia when the medication for my back didn't completely fix it. Overall muscles hurt at times.  The FM is primary in my life.  I hope whatever decisions you all make in your life for weight loss surgery, it comes with a fitting to understanding fully what you will get.  You will never BINGE again huge amounts of food and who wants to do that, not me.  With RY you do get dumping but you can sometimes get that with the Band.

Be wary of going to another country for precisely the reason XFATBOY said in his story. It could have been his band but having it in place kinked makes me question placement.  My doctor secures on side of the band with a stitch to the abdominal wall so it doesn't slip.
I researched doctors and price, talked to others, went on several websites and ended up  on Lapbandtalk to find more info.  I suggest anyone do that and research before they decide. The band was for certain for me.

Best of luck.

I have had my band for four years.  I am 49 years old and have battled with weight all my life.  I have lost 57kgs and had a second operation because the band slipped.  Even  now if I eat too fast I will vomit but in general I can eat most things but only small portions.  The lap band has been a life saver for me and I would do it all over again even after having a second op.  Go for it I say you have nothing to lose.  Initially you still have to watch what you shovel in, if you really want to lose weight the lap band is the best aid ever.
