Scared

I am torn between the bypass and the band.  Every time I think I have my mind made up, I read blogs that scare the crap out of me.  Each time I decide on which one...I get another horror story telling me the other is better.  I am tired of being overweight but don't have any complications from my weight yet... so is it worth the risk?  I want to lose weight so bad, but don't want to risk my life for it! I need to quit reading blogs

Have you talked to your doctor about the risks and benefits of each? My mom & aunt had gastric bypass and a lady at work had the lap band. The band is a lot easier to recover from, but the weight doesn't melt off as quick as with gastric bypass. With any kind of surgery you will be able to find horror stories but you will also be able to find people that swear by the procedure.

The best way to choose which procedure is right for you is by consulting with your doctor. Good luck!

Dear Ms Hill,

I'm a doctor and I allways say the same to my patients: be as conservative as possible.

I'd go first for the band and then (if it doesn't work for you) try the bypass.

Why?

Because the bypass is more dangerous and irreversible, and WILL create you absorption problems and vitamin deficits. The band is reversible, technically easier to set, and safer.

Anyway... why are you considering the intervention? Do you really need it?

Hugs

Isabel
