Abnormal Blood tests - Help!

My daughter (27) went to the doctor for chest pain (cardiac was ruled out) and was given a blood test.  The results are concerning & she's being sent to a Hematologist next week.  These were the results (2 different tests, 2 days apart, results approx. the same in both): MONO% 32.5; BASO% 1.0; Neut# 0.23; Seg/100wbc 1; Lymphs/100wbc 55; Lym Atyp/100wbc 2; MONO/100wbc 36; WBC 2.8.  She also has some abdominal tenderness (over the spleen area).  All else results & exam, are normal.  Does this sound like leukemia/lymphoma?  I know next to nothing about these diseases - any help on what these *might* mean, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi.

Your daughter has very low white blood counts and the neutrophil count is also quite low.  If she does not have any symptoms pertaining to a possible infection (like fever, chills, etc.), then this can really be a herald of a hematologic/ bone marrow problem.  Leukemia is possible but other differential diagnosis would include bone marrow aplasia, myelodysplastic syndrome, or metastatic cancer to the bone marrow.

Other non hematologic differential diagnoses would include typhoid fever or tuberculosis.  I would agree with the hematologist consult and I hope this can be done as soon as possible.  She may need to have a bone marrow biopsy done to examine the state of her bone marrow.

For now, make sure she would always wear a mask, and stay away from crowded places as she can catch infections very easily.  Regards and God bless.
