Cipro long term side effects

Cipro long term side effects

I was given Cipro 10 years ago during my bout with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. In the last two years I have suffered 2 complete tears in rotator cuff, 1 complete torn bicep, elbow, knee and now an achilles tendon. Can these injuries be caused by my previous use of Cipro?

Hello, Robert, That's quite a situation. The question is whether the tendon damage can occur 10 years after taking the drug. Everything I've seen indicates it happens within days or weeks. So that's probably what you've been hearing from everyone. But if not the drug, then what is the cause?

The complaints are related to the cipro itself, but not to the reason for taking cipro, such as AML.

Here is the FDA page:
http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/ucm126085.htm

"Other reasons for tendon ruptures include:
physical activity or exercise
kidney failure
tendon problems in the past, such as with rheumatoid arthritis"

It would also be relevant if you had problems early on that have continued for 10 years, versus nothing happening until 10 years after.

Also this:

"This risk is further increased in those over age 60, those on concomitant steroid therapy, as well as in kidney, heart, and lung transplant recipients."

Here's their number at FDA, it's likely just a path of frustration but who knows:
