Fluid-filled mass refilling after FNA biopsy - please help

Hello - my husband has a rather large (4 cm) mass on the right side of his neck, above the collar bone. We're awaiting the results of an FNA biopsy earlier this week. We're not sure what it is, but the CT scan and the ultrasound indicated that it was a very fluid mass. In fact, the biopsy removed a lot of straw-colored liquid and the mass nearly completely disappeared after the procedure. The next morning, however, the mass had returned to its original size.

My questions, while we wait for the results (which is very hard to do): Would a mass this fluid likely be benign? And is it unusual for it to refill so quickly after biopsy?

Thank you for your help! We are very concerned.

Fluid filled masses are usually cysts and benign. What is generally looked at with concern is if it is solid, firm and fixed in place. Just the fact that it's above the collarbone will make them a little more inclined to watch it. Depending on what is causing the cyst would determine why it filled so quickly afterwards. Does he have any other symptoms?

Hope this helped! If you have more concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you so much for your quick response; I really appreciate it. He doesn't have any other symptoms, but he does have a family history of lymphoma and leukemia (father and grandfather), so when he noticed this lump a few weeks ago, he immediately went to get it checked out because that was a concern. The lump felt rubbery but firm, and movable. It made a dome-shaped lump in the corner of the neck where the neck meets the shoulder.

The CT scan report said a neoplasm was unlikely, and the ultrasound technician agreed that it looked very fluid. We were so happy when the lump disappeared after the biopsy, and very disappointed to see it return again yesterday - it almost seems bigger and firmer than before. Does this mean that the cyst walls are solid enough to allow for refilling? We're totally dumbfounded and stressed out about this - just hoping for answers!

Thanks again for your help.

An FNA uses a very small needle, so the puncture site most likely just healed up quickly which enabled it to fill back up.
Please keep in mind that I'm not a doctor. I cannot say with any certantity that it is benign. BUT, I do know that most fluid filled cysts are benign. Testing any cyst for cancer cells is standard procedure because there is always a small chance that it could be malignant.
I had a small fluid filled cyst on my breast a few years ago, my mother is a breast cancer survivor, so you can imagine my worry. Mammogram indicated cyst, doctor was pretty convinced it was a cyst but, standard procedure was needle biopsy. It turned out to be just a cyst.

Did they tell you when results would be in? I always find out how many days for results, and if I don't get the call in the morning expected, I'm putting a call in to them by mid afternoon. I'd also write down these questions you have about it filling back up, what could be the cause, and what can be done about it? Even a benign cyst, if left alone can either continue to grow, causing discomfort, or it can get infected, and cause it's own set of complications.

Please keep me posted, and if you need more info, I'll do my best to help!
