goning to school

My fiveyr old is starting school nextweek.he has Acute Lymphoblastic Lueukemia better know as.ALL..My consern is him being around all the other kids..he can get anything realey fast.(he also has to were a mask to school) I think that my big prob is him bening away from home for 8 hours..he takes so meny meds..and there is so much we have to watch for..i dont know if the school can handel it..thay seem realey nerves about him..dont get me wrong hes not an ivlad he can do almost everything that other kids do he just has to be carefull. he has a port so that conserns me.the iv not in .in less he is geting his cemo..or is on antbotic..im sorry for rambling im just realey worryed..i do know that he needs this,to be with other kids so he dont fill so dif..ok do u ladys think im crazzy for being worryed....thank u.......valerie

I would not send him for the full day, let him do a half day.  Are you expecting the school to give him meds?  If so, I think that is too much to ask, and I would be nervous administer meds to a sick child as well.

What does his oncologist say?  Is he in agreement with him starting school?

No ill give him his meds before he goes to school...and then before bed..he has to try to go all day (school reqerment) if he cant handel it dr can give note and he can go hafe a day....His dr. think that it will be good for him to try and go to school, right now we want to try to give him a normal life...My thing is i dont want him to be made fun of.(becuse of the mask) That is what makes him nrvise to..he keeps sying everyone is goning to look at him and laugh...the school told me thay will talk to the other kids,and let him talk and show his port so maby thay understand and dont makefun of him..

Mother - I don't understand  - the school actually REQUIRES 5 year olds to attend school full-time?  

What about home schooled kids,  what are their options?  It sounds like Bailey will be enrolling in Kindergarten - is that REQUIRED in Indiana?

This disease has a great rate of cure for his age - you can hope and pray for total recovery.  I wouldn't send him at all until he is well.

I agree with you about the face mask.  If your doctor expects significant improvement in the next year - even total recovery - I'd wait and not send him to school looking very different.

Indiana passed a law in may that all kendergarden is required to go to all day kendergrten...the school is been nice about it and knows that he will miss alot of school....as long as he is able to go. now if anyone in his class has the flu,or cold he has to miss school for 5 days after thay are back the hole time there out..so most of his school lerning is goning to be on me..im fine with that.Ys h has great chance for a cure.....he will be in treatment till 2010...

I want what is best for him and the dr..said right this min hes doning good and he should have this normal time in life..

I am so sorry that you have to worry about your son going to school on top of everything else.   I too live in Indiana. What part are you from?  I live in West Central Indiana about 30 miles from the Illinois border.  What part are you from?  I was wondering if you could tell me some of the signs your son had when you found out he had Lueukemia?  I will be taking my 9 year old autistic daughter to the doctor tomorrow because she has had a bruise on her hip for 2 months now.  She has also been SO  tired all the time.  She will wake up in the morning and be ready for a nap half an hour later.  If you could give me some information, that would be great.  I will be keeping you and your son in my prayers.  Kasie

Hi.. i live in gas city about 1hour away from indy...the first thing we noticed is what alot of 4yrolds complane about ...his legs hurt....i still fill bad i thought it was growing pains..then he started to get pin size red dots all over his body, about 2 days later he started bruseing i mean bad. our dog jumped on him and he had a huge bruise..all over his body bruises started poping up..this is all in about a 2 week...by the time he got to the dr he had bruise all over .... he was tired ... and realiy pale.it was a big shock to us...i felt like i wanted to die..i was so scared, it was horbal watching him get spinals and the surgres..now a year later it just seems to be a part of our life..like i has always been this way.....i hope everything goes good with ur dd...u will be in my prayers....if u want to talk here is my myspace imfo...myspace/vjsmitty
