Depending on when someone is diagnosed, it's entirely possible to live with CML for a long time--even without treatment--particularly if it is in the "chronic" phase.

I have a friend with CML and while he was diagnosed more than 2 years ago, he only recently received chemotherapy and is doing great. Sometimes, doctors will wait to begin treatment for CML until it becomes more problematic for the patient and/or they begin showing symptoms. Usually, it's diagnosed in adults over age 50, so it doesn't tend to significantly shorten a person's life, if it shortens the life at all.
