swollen glands

by kay67, Sep 30, 2008 08:35AM
I'm a 41 year old female with swollen gland behind my right ear. Been there for over a year now. I have swollen gland under my right arm for 3years now. I have a swollen gland under my left arm for over 7 months. I now have swollen glands in right side of my  neck by the collarbone. I am tired all the time and  I break out in a sweat for no real reason, for the last few months.I am now losing weight with no effort at all. I have been on thyroid meds for the last ten years for hypothyrodism. About twice a year I have a dry cough that last for about 6 weeks. I hope this is
enough info. Should I see my doctor?

Hi Kay.
Lymph nodes commonly enlarge when there is an infection.  There are times when even with resolution of the infection, the enlarged lymph nodes do not go back to its original size.  A recurrent infection would tend to make these lymph nodes to further enlarge.  However, there are other conditions that can present with lymph node enlargement.  One example would be lymphoma.  Lymphoma can also produce B symptoms like weight loss and sweating.
You need to see your doctor so that you can be evaluated and managed appropriately.  Tests need to be done like a chest x-ray to rule out possible lung problem.  A biopsy of one of the lymph nodes may also be done.
Regards.
