AST 1533 and ALT 2734

Hi,
My 25-year-old son is in the hospital because of high ALT and AST. ALT is 2734 and AST is 1533. He was diagnosed a week ago with hepatitis C, but his numbers keep rising. Can anyone shed light on this - is this normal with hep c? His bilirubin is slightly elevated, and there is ammonia in his blood.
Thank you for any insight as to what may be going on. He is waiting for a gastro consult, but I have been having difficulty getting information.

Hi Terry:

I'd have your doctors evaluate for Autoimmune hepatitis.  It is uncommon in males, but I am about your son's age and have AIH.  With levels that high, it is unlikely hepatitis is the only cause - it would require some intense liver destruction.
