Can the parasite Blastocystis Hominis cause liver/gall bladder pain?
I recently found that I am infected with B. Hominis parasite after gradually getting worse and worse gastrointestinal problems since November of 2007 to present.
For the last few weeks I have had an increasing pain in my right under my rib cage area, and some pain in my back as well.  My acupuncturist thinks it is my liver, but when I visited my MD for the GI probs (diarhea (diarrhea), vomit, nausea, dizziness) he told me to take prilosec and we did test for H. Pylori (negative) and took stool samples.  A week later he found the B. Hominis, and now I am on my second day of Metronidazole.
Anybody have some thoughts on this?  I am worried about my liver/gall bladder.
Also, my stool darkens in color when I eat a very fatty meal, which my acupuncturist showed great concern to.

I got sick with B hominis in Nov 2007 and got very bad as well. Lost about 25lbs, extreme nausea (always worse in morning), dry mouth, diarrhea, chills with no fever etc...I got dehydrated and landed in emerg 3 times. After 2 months, took metronidazole and diarrhea went away but still had bad nausea and started to develop other symptoms-chest pain (left and right sided) and severe back pain. They did all kinds of tests and finally a HIDA scan showed that my gallbladder had 0% ejection fraction (basically was not working). They scheduled me for surgery and when it was taken out, found no signs of disease or stones, just a bit of sludge built up from it not working.

Now the question remains-which came first, the chicken or the egg? Did the blasto cause the gallbladder probs or vise versa? I am almost completely convinced that the blasto caused all of it-my internist even agreed that sometimes parasites like that can harbour in the gallbladder and that is why they are hard to eradicate. After they took out the gallbladder, the chest and back pain almost immediately subsided;however, I now have new probs due to removal of it (minor compared to pain i had though).

In any case, although all tests show that blasto is gone, I still have some symptoms that were there from day 1-morning nausea, violent reaction to alcohol, caffeine or fatty pasta (always extreme nausea at 4am and takes me a few days to get back to normal). My internist thinks it's a continued immune response to the infection as all tests for blasto have come back negative; however, I am worried I may still have it as I have seen on other sites that is is difficult to detect with normal stool samples.

Do you have an update on your condition?
