Dilated Portal and Splenic Veins

I have been told (after a CT scan) that I have a dilated portal vein (1.7cm) and a dilated splenic vein (.85cm). My liver function is described as normal. What can cause the dilation and should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance,

Vinty

Hi Anitha,

Thank you so much for answering my questions. You said that any distal obstruction to the venus flow may cause dilation, can you expand on this please?

I will indeed keep you updated, thanks again.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

The normal diameter of the portal vein is 12mm, so there is marginal dilatation. If the liver function tests are normal, you can go for a follow up at intervals to see if it is progressing. Besides liver disorders dilatation can occur if there is any distal obstruction to the venous flow.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
