Elevated ALT

My ALT was elevated to 42 (normal being 5-41). Now my doctor wants to do a sonogram of my liver. What could the problem be? I do have hypothyroidism. Could that possibly cause it?

Have you had a ERCP blood test?

I don't know. I would ask your doc and maybe ask the question in the expert forums just to get another opinion besides your doc.

Good luck

This month for the first time my ALT was 53 (norm up to 40). Then a couple weeks later it was 41 and then 43 the next day. One day my pancrease Amylase and Lipase was elevated and next day the numbers were fine.

Could this elevation be from meds and if I discontinue the meds, would my ALT numbers go down? Or does this mean I may have permanent liver damage?

My ALT levels have been higher than yours.  My sonogram showed fatty deposits in the liver.  I was pretty overweight at the time.  Since lose a bunch of weight the number is down a lot but still a little elevated.  It's good to have the tests done, just to be sure.

This happened to me about 1 year ago. It was elevated just 1 point. My doctor checked me for hepatitits then and everything was normal. Had the sonogram done and it was OK.

Well, seems like I am always singing the same song all the time, but being I was diagnosed with hep c and had slightly elevated enzymes, my opinion when I see something like this is to suggest getting tested for hep A, B and C.  It may not be that, but you do want to rule out hepatitus.  Even if your doc says, nah, I don't think you have hepatitus, insist on getting tested, thats what I did and its good that I did, being I do have it.

But remember there are other reasons for elevated enzymes, ,,,herbs, meds, strenuous exercise etc, so I don't want to frighten you, just wanted to give you something to consider looking into to.

Good luck.
