I'm a healthy 33 year old who just had an annual physical with bloodwork (the main CBC one). Everything came back perfectPerfect choice except for my Bilirubin level which was 36 ( 0 to 20 is normalNormal saline flush). I had fasted for 12 hours before getting my bloodwork and I had 2 shots of liquor and two beers 1 hour before starting the fast (so in other words four drinks thirteen hours before the tests). Coudl the alcohol the night before negatively impacted the levels? Lastly, I have thalassemiaThalassemia Thalassemia major Thalassemia minor minor and in my research it appears as though elevated bilirubin may be more common amongst us.
My doctor did not seem to concerned but she wants me to retest my bilirubin level in addition to ALT and ALK PHOS tests in "two to three weeks". I'm a bit nervous given that I see mentions of tumors, hepatitis, etc as possible causes for the elevation. I did ask her about possibilities and she did mention hepatitis but that she was not worried about that for me because the other results did not point to that.
My questions are 1. What impact did the alcohol have on my test and 2. Is my thalassemia a consideration in this? OH I guess the third is how worried should I be?
To start with, will answer to your your last question first....If all other LFT (Liver Function Test) levels are within limit and it is only the bilirubin that is elevated, then probably no reason to be overly worried, but all the same, suggest do not drink anything for a few days prior to the next test and better still do not drink at all until you have a proper diagnosis done. Having said that, is both the direct and indirect bilirubin levels elevated ? Or it is only the indirect bilirubin that is elevated ? If your answer is affirmirmative to the latter question, then maybe you will need to also check with your docter on the possibility of Gilberts Syndrome. Bottom line....Do not mess with the liver...it takes long to hurt and longer to heal !! All the best. Am sure everyting will be allright.
