Hepatitis C related esophageal varices

Respected Doctor

This is with regards to my father aged 70 yrs who has been diagonised with Hep C related early cirrhosis 6 months back. The diagnosis was made when he had to be hospitalised due to esophageal variceal bleeding. Endoscopy revealed 4 Grade 3 varices out of which one was bleeding actively. Band ligation was performed and the bleeding was brought under control. Subsequently 3 endoscopies were performed and the latest endoscopy shows a single grade 1 varix.

His liver function test results are as follows:

SGPT - 59
SGOT - 50
Alk Phosphatase - 160
Total Bilirubin - 0.8
Total proteins - 6.5
Albumin - 3.8
Globulin 2.7.

He is presently asymptomatic, has good appetite, no jaundice, no ascites or oedema.

From the latest reports can we say that his liver function is improving?

Will the single varix that is present gradually regress and go away?

Eagerly awaiting for your valuable reply

Hi sorry to hear about your father. If you click on the "forums" and look to the right under Hepatitus (hepatitis) C and click on that forum, there is a "Dr. Douglas Dieterich" who answers questions such as this if you are looking for a doctor to answer your question. I honestly don't know if a doctor answers on this forum so I don't want to tell you no, when maybe a doctor does come by here(?)

I wish both you and your father the best.
BTW, there are 2 Hep C forums and a Transplant Forum also. On those forums, its members who are going thru hep c treatment or have been thru it already and also some members who have had transplants. You may know all of this already, but incase you didn't ...

Take care,
MO
