Husband was diagnosis with ascites

My husband was diagnosise with ascites in August, 2009.  He died March 1, 2011.  He had stopped drinking after he was diagnosis in August, 2009.  After having fluid removed from his abdomen and upon examination of the fluid there was an infection due to either bonchititis or pneumonia in his right lung.  He had a tube inserted in his lung area to try to help inflate the lung.  At that time, he came through the procdure but during the night he was transferred to ICU because his blood pressure continued to be low.  After three days doctors determine that the had to operate and physically clean out the infection.  He came out of surgery but as the night went on his blood pressure was still low.  He was given something to try to bring up his pressure, but at 1 a.m., March 1 he died.  Was it envitable that he was going to die?

I am so sorry to hear of your loss~~

I agree with the above poster.  Usually this comes along with cirrhosis of the liver.

I hope you are taking care of yourself during this difficult time.   May you find comfort~~~sara

I am so sorry for your loss. Acites is a consequence of end stage liver failure. When the liver can no longer make proteins the fluid starts to build up in the abdomen. It can be challenging to balance the excess fluid and low blood pressure. The fluid can be drained to promote comfort but it will always return. Any IV fluids given to increase blood pressure will quickly move to the abdomen. Unfortunately, he was also battling a serious infection which likely moved to the bloodstream (sepsis). This further lowers blood pressure and causes hypovolemic shock to the heart. Your dear husband had very little time left. Infections are a kind way of releasing the person from a painful existence as they make us tired and less aware of any discomforts we experience. Again, I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband and pray that you find the peace and comfort needed to endure this difficult time. xox
