hepatic encephalopathy

My husband has had bouts of hepatic encephalopathy and sometimes he ends up at the hospital where they treat him with Lactulose and discharge him after a few days.  He always seems so much weaker after these hospital stays.  The last time I was able to work it through without hospitalization.  He finally moved his bowels and came back after around 24 hours.  He woke up this morning confused and I am trying not to end up in the ER.  I know if I call the doctor that is what they will tell me to do.  I am keeping him on his meds, getting him to eat and drink he is very confused and sleepy and I worry if I am doing the right thing.  Any thoughts?
