high level AST and ALT

by drock260, Mar 27, 2009 10:15PM
I recently recieved some blood tests back with abnormal levels of AST and ALT
AST 259
ALT 271
negative on HCV,HBS,HIV

I have not drank any alcohol for 1 year, I did drink before but not all the time.
my main concern is i did have some abuse of steriods in my past but have not taken those for about 8 years
so i guess i am asking can that lead to levels, i thought once you stopped that the levels would slowly return to normal

I would think you would notice pretty quickly the aftermath of steroid abuse (but the effects can linger for a long time and sometimes permanently).

There are about a dozen conditions that cause most hepatic inflamation (inflammation) (with resultant enzyme elevation)...  The doc may run a panel of antinuclear antibodies, TIBC, Ceruloplasmin, and other esoteric tests to look to other causes....

When is your next scheduled follow up? The doc will likely want to monitor your levels every 6 weeks I would think - until He/SHe sees a significant shift downward in these levels..
