swollen liver

I had my gallbladder removed last year because of severe pain. I've had pain in the area ever since. About a month ago I got pain in the same area but it was much worse so I went to the er. I stayed there for 3 days while they did numerous test that included blood tests, mri, and 2 ct scans. The scans were fine but my liver was swollen and my liver enzymes were elevated. I tested neg for hep a,d&c and any viruses. They released me saying that my liver enzymes were going back down but without a diagnosis just telling me to follow up with a GE. I went to the doc yesterday and my enzymes are back to normal but I still have a dull pain, nasua, headache, night time itchiness I'm my palms, feet, and ankles. Also, my calcium is low. My appointment with the GE isn't till the 27th and I'm so stressed out not knowing. What are some things it could be?

It could be a problem with the now 'gone' gallbladder. There can be subsequent issues in which the common bile duct or the muscular opening to the small intestine (sphincter of Oddi) spasm, causing intense pain. It can result in elevated liver enzymes and in itching when the bilirubin - product of the 'backed up bile - ends up in high concentration in the blood. The spasms can be the result of sludge or stones that 'escape' into the common bile duct during surgery or are formed after surgery. In other cases the cause of the spasms is unknown.

You may want to talk to your doc about 'sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD)'. Consider asking him/her to check the state of your biliary system via MRCP. In the meantime, you may want to follow a low fat diet. It can be of help in some cases.

Make sure your pancreatic enzyme levels are also checked.
