Colon cancer

My Dad is in stage 4 with colon cancer.  He has to wear a bag.  Has taken 5 chemo treatments.  Now he seems to be having fluid build up in the abdomen from the tumors draining.  What does this mean?  Does it mean that the tumors are shrinking from the chemo or is his cancer spreading from this fluid drainage?  If his cancer is spreading, how long does he have to live?

the fluid called ascites could be related to advanced colon cancer or to his liver having some problems, related to the chemo.
