LIVER TRANSPLANT EXPERT FORUM
I have a question about liver failure.

I have a question about liver failure.

I have a close relative who shows many signs/symptoms of liver failure.  He has been an alcoholic for the past 20 years.  Recently, he's been having severe stomach pain, nausea, weight loss, and has a "gray" look to him.

I have looked over his blood test results; the "alkaline phasphatase" and "GOT/AST" numbers are quite high -- much higher than the "normal" range.  Does anyone know if these are indicators of liver failure or cirrhosis?  I'm looking for help -- my relative won't reveal anything.  I think he's in serious denial.  Thanks, everyone.

these definitely can refelect liver damage from drinking or other liver conditions associated or unasociated with alcohol use.  He should be worked up further with at least a CT scan.
