Just a story from my experience. My father in law had the same diagnosis and they went in and cutCuts and puncture wounds him open to check and it turned out to be scarring from shrapnel from WWII. Unfortunately the operation was too much for him and he died from it. I don't know if scarring is something that just happens as we age or not.
