Lung CT Scan- Mild Hyperinflation

Lung CT Scan- Mild Hyperinflation

My lung CT scan came back as follows:

The trachea and main stem bronchi are patent.  The lungs show mild hyperinflation.  There is no consolidation or effusion.

Impression:  No acute cardiopulmonary process.

I read a review on this site concerning another individual who asked about their lung scan.  There report had mil hyperinflation also.  The doctors response listed a few reasons and he said that this diagnosis shows up in chronic smokers.  If a person has been smoking for 20 years and has this diagnosis what damage could they be looking at to their lungs from the hyperinflation?
