PET Scan Results

My 65 yr old father was recently in the hospital with Diverticulosis, he had a severe bleed requiring 4 units of blood.  He had a severe nose bleed a few weeks prior to this (he has had these before).  While in the hospital his BP bottomed out due to lack of blood and he was in ICU for about 3 days.  His kidney function was somewhat decreased but, did improve on it's own and his bp finally got stabilized.  Through the course of all of this a spot showed up on an x-ray.  He has asbestosis and had a spot on his lungs a few years back and they deemed it to be non malignant.  The pulmonary doctor did a biopsy and then went out of town.  My dad saw his PCP and he told him that the biopsy was negative.  My Dad had his follow-up with the pulmonary doctor a week later and it was then that he learned that the doctor could not actually reach the spot on his lung and that he needed a PET Scan.  This was the first that anyone had heard about the doctor not being able to reach the spot.  He obviously biopsied something and it came back negative but, we are not sure what.  Dad had the PET scan done 3 days ago and the doctor left a message on my dad's voicemail at home stating that the area was "hot" and therefore would be indicative of a cancer but, he wasn't sure and wanted him to see a surgeon for another biopsy.  He then proceeded to tell my dad to have a nice day.  We are appalled with how this doc is handling this, leaving a message on the answering machine.  Could this area be hot and it not be cancer.  The first biopsy did show some bacterial infection in his lungs.  We are just trying to find our way through this and figure out what the next step should be.
