Pain in back

Pain in back

Hi, I'm a 28 year old female and have been having this dull, aching pain in my back for about a week next to my right shoulder blade,on the inside by my spine. It doesn't really hurt that much but I notice it.  I have been smoking for a long time and plan on getting the gum to quit, but I'm worried it could be lung cancer because I looked it up online and that's a symptom. I also have bad posture and scoliosis but not as bad as my mom. Sometimes when I breathe in deep I wheez but not all the time and not much coughing. I was wondering if you think it could be a pulled muscle or from sleeping wrong (I usually sleep  on my right side) or something worse. I have no insurance so I really just want an opinion.  Thank you.

Hi,

The symptoms you described seem to be intermittent, which is not similar to cancer pain (which is usually persistent and progressive). Back pain in a lung cancer patient is usually due to involvement of the bones. If the ribs are involved, then there may be pain during breathing, if it is one of the bones on the spine it could mean weakness to paralysis of the legs. The odds of cancer for someone your age would be small but not impossible,  quitting smoking is a good step to take.  If you have other risk factors such as scoliosis and posture, then this would likely be something to consider. Observe for changes in the symptoms after making some effort to change things. What can be expected from the scoliosis depends on its severity.
