Start chemo or not

Start chemo or not

Hi...I am looking for a 2nd opinion for my husband who was diagnosed with NSC stage 1 adenocarcinoma.

He's a retired 59 yr old, feels well and is active.  He had prostate cancer 2 yrs ago; no treatment needed, apparently both cancers are unrelated.  Unfortunately, he has smoked for the past 45 yrs but quit a month and a half ago when he had surgery to remove the top lobe from his right lung where a 2.5 cm mass was found.  A few cancer cells were also found in one of five lymph nodes.

His oncologist said without chemo there was a 60% chance of the cancer returning at some point and  with chemo, a 50% chance of it returning.

Would you agree with these percentages?  He is hesitant about starting chemo this Tuesday where it only increases his odds by 10%.

His father smoked and had colon, prostate and lung cancer.

Any advice you could provide on the survival rate or the percentages would be most appreciated.  THANK YOU!!

I am not an expert - not at all - but my aunt had bladder cancer and her bladder was removed and reconstructed. She did not have chemo or radiation afterward and the cancer spread (through lymph nodes) to vital organs in her body within a year of her bladder being removed.  We will never know if the cancer would have returned regardless if she had had chemo or not, but my guess is that her chances of keeping it at bay would have improved tremendously.  Good Luck to your husband and you!
