on a ventalator

o.k I really would like some help here ,my aunt is 58 years old and has emphazema and has been on oxygen for years now , well last saturday she was put in the hospital and they have had her on a ventalator.my question is how long can one stay on this machine and if she has not showed any improvement in all honesty can someone tell me if they think she will recover I am so scared .if anyone has delt with please let me know
