underarm pain

by daughter173, Dec 13, 2007 08:22AM
My Dad has lung cancer, his tumor is 6 centimeters and undergoing radiation daily for 7 weeks and 6 treatments weekly of chemo.   He has done 3 cycles of chemo and 3 weeks radiation.  He is beginning to get some pain in his underarm on the side of the tumor, can anyone tell me if this is normal?   The radiologist said not to worry but its hard not too.....any input would be greatly appreciated

Hi.  It is "normal" to feel some pain around the tumor site during chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  The tumor responds to the treatment by becoming inflamed, and this causes the pain.  Although it is not a cause for worry, your father needs adequate pain medication, and his doctor should provide him with this.  Pain relief should be a standard part of your father's cancer treatment.
