Flare Ups

Hi Everyone, my mom was recently diagnosed with Lupus, well basically they had just put a name to all her symptoms. Every few days now she has a flare up where she will get hives all over and puts her in bed all day. She will see a rheutologist end of Feb. What will a rhumetoloist help with her symptoms?

Well, the rheumatologist is going to check for what types of symptoms she is having, and treat those symptoms.  Some of us do very well on a antimalarial called Plaquenil, but not all of us do.  I am on Plaquenil, and noticed a major improvement in how long I can be in the sun and most of my pain disappeared.  About three months after starting that, I was put on Methotrexate (chemo) in very low doses, and it has helped even more.  Not 100%, but enough for me to feel alive again.  I can run after my 2 year old grandson now, and I have even been spending more time in the sun.  For some Lupus patients, the sun is what is causing the blisters and fatigue.  But not all.  The rheumatologist will decide which medicine is best for her symptoms based on her medical history and other meds she may be on, etc.  They really do help.  I wish her luck and she is in my prayers.  Tell her to research all drugs the doctor prescribes to ensure she understands all of it.
