I did the same thing and googled that as I had thought I'd heard it before. Just mentioned it to my husband and he looked at me in horror. His passing is tragic but it would be good if Lupus could get some recognition and hence some more research funding as a result.
I always enjoyed Michael Jackson; the first I recall of his art is singing a plaintive love song to a rat: "Ben".....people with complex behavioral problems (me and MJ, among others) tend to want to help, because we have been helped and supported; in consequence. perhaps a professional contributor/member should, after a proper time, of course, request information as to the "lupus connection" in his life, I just stumbled in to this community, and I am at a complete loss: I have classic SLE, possible CNS INVOLVEMENT, diabetes, arthritis, OCD, multiple type radiation exposure, just to name a few. I have DUTIFULLY passed these and other autoimmune maladies on to my children, grandchildren AND POSSIBLY GREAT GRANDCHILD. Thanks for being here, Ellie
It would make sense if lupus played at least a part in his death. Apparently he never could sleep for very long. I can relate to that. He apparently (at least per the media) had repeatedly wanted to just be knocked out to rest. I can understand that too (the thought but not the pursuit of it). Not sleeping gets old after awhile. I actually get stressed out the closer it gets to so called "bedtime" from the thought of am I going to get any sleep.
Lupus would also explain his skin lightening, difficulties with surgery (cosmetic), difficulties recovering from scalp injury due to burning. Also lupus is known for leading to cardiac arrest due to vascular changes, etc.
It might also explain why if he is not biologically related to his children (as media seems to state) he might have chosen to have it that way. If he knew he had lupus and knew of possible inheritance then as much as he wanted children he would not want to pass the genes onto them.
I am not saying I agree with all of MJ choices in life but I will remember his music and marvel at the musical talent he had. The rest to me is between him and his family and close friends. It would be interesting to know if he did indeed have lupus and would help put lupus in the spotlight where it belongs. The world needs to know about this disease and people who have it need to know they are not alone in their struggles.
FYI. Good morning America Thursday morning (tomorrow) is going to interview Mj's doctor and in the commercial I saw he already mentioned lupus. I am taping it. Thanks for the comments.
It has now been verified that he did have Lupus. I really wish he'd gone public with this and helped raise money. It must have been so hard for him to work as hard as he did preparing for his tour. I would not be surprised if his heart condition was a result of his Lupus.
Unbelievable! I was wondering if did about a year ago, because his hands and fingernails look really bad. I remember my mother, who died of the disease, had fingernails just like that. No wonder he wore a glove and many times he had braces on his arms, along with bandaged fingers. I can't even imagine the pain he must have been in. I have a hard time just getting up......How did he keep going like that? Unbelievable.
I hope Michael Jackson's name will bring light and research to lupus and autoimmunue diseases...I have "autoimmunue" disease, which is just taking over my joints and progressing yearly..I am 39 years old and some days I can bearly stand up. My hips and knees are so bad....the doctors say it is one of the hundreds autoimmune diseases that don't have a name such as lupus, etc... . I hope that one of MJ's charities in his will is the lupus foundation. This is one disease that needs attention and medical research to help those in need!!! YOU and ME!!!

michael has systemic lupus erythemus. that disease can attack every internal part of your body.killing a person in 10 to 20 yrs. after diagnosis.this disease cause internal pain to the joints and muscles. swelling of the feet and hands and serious skin dissorders may not forget mental. when i say internal that means lungs too.this causes you to have beathing problems and having bad mood swings. please understand this disease and read more. i now from the heart i suffer from this disease for 15 yrs. i wounder how long i have because sometimes i feel like i am slowly dying.
In 2003 I was Dx'ed with SLE, I had been ill for a week with what I thought was the flu. I could not take a whole breath, nor lay down without being proped-up. When I called my Dr.'s office and told them that, they said that it was unlikely the flu as it is May and the flu season should be over with. So, they had me come in that day, lucky me, and they had me in the lab after checking my vitals. My Dr. put me on pred. and lortabs and after 9 tubes of blood they had me come back to the lab a few days later for 5 more tubes!!! Within 10-12 days they called to tell me every single childhood disease that I ever had!! And then said it was SLE, I said "what's that?" A month later the Arthritis Research Foundation took my Dr's. request for me to have a second opinion, I went and it was comfirmed. I had an echo done on my heart also as I had an infection there and in the lineing of my lungs.
Now I pay attention to being in the sun too long, it tends to exhaust me also. I have not had a flare that bad again, thank goodness, and I have not had kidney involvement, so I am grateful. I do suffer with fibro and chronic fatigue, these seems to be an everyday thing now along with some pretty stiff headaches. Lupus is something to pay attention to, it can sneakup on a person and really make you miserable. So with MJ, I can understand his need for pain meds, but also the tolorance issues do happen when they are taken long term. Still, that doesn't help with his pain and the stress he had in life. I hate that he died so young with such a beautiful voice. Sad.
