lupus is a condition where your immune system goes into overdrive and decides to attack itself.  It usually affects the joints and skin, but can affect any organ especially the kidney filtering system.  It can cause inflamation (inflammation) around the heart, brain, liver, intestines, eyes, bladder, lungs, etc.  It can affect any area of your whole entire body.
