I assume the drs. put your wife on prendisone, cytoxin already or some other immunesuppresant drug?     Have you considered stem cell transplant?   Ask the doctors about this..   I think the National Health Institutes are conducting studies on this now.

Also pray, PRAY about every attack she gets in her body.  I dont know if you believe in God or not, but I know from years of experience God will answer your prayers.    Read psalm 34... just read the bible in general... ask God to help you and give you answers and to give the drs. the wisdom to know what to do.   You can pray over your wife, you just need a little faith to believe.. ask God to heal her...  I found calling the 700 club helpful... they have a prayer hotline, best to call during the day.

Dear Friend:

I know it sounds very bad, but it actually could be worse.  A co-worker of ours has lupus and it now has her in the hospital with a brain infection- She's in a coma.  We have a few co-workers with Lupus that have been through what your wife is currently going through and they are back to work and doing well.  They usually are out of work for 8-9 months at a time, near death, and the doctors pull them through.  It's amazing to see them at work again.  Give your wife lots of love, and get the doctors to find someone to sit and talk to you about all of this.  That's their job.  If you don't ask questions, they assume you don't need answers.  As long as she doesn't smoke, the heart transplant may help her immensely!   GOD BLESS YOU!

"Recovery",.. Is only viable if A. she goes into remission or B. you are able to push the doctors to try everything every time there is a episode. Lupus is a snake with many heads, just when one gets treated, another bites. "IF" treated the prognosis is troubled, if not worse. Spend as much time with her as you can, do the things she has always wanted to do scale down, she will need to probably think about not trying to work if possible. My wife has experienced a Lupus stroke aka cerebral vasculitis. All the test were negative for stroke the first time and it was small and misdiagnosed as vertigo. Then the big stroke hit and again all test negative but she could not use her right side. Then the did a angiogram (ink induced prior to MRI), and found the infarction, they started cytoxin and we though things were getting better but not her stomach is having issues. Vomiting, rash, diarrhea. She is 48, her sister died of Lupas at 35. I fear we are screwed!
